Which canton are we looking for today?Which district are we looking for today?Which district has this outline?
Guess a canton. Every guess and the map show how close you are. One of 144 districts. Every guess and the map show how close you are. Only the outline: north is up, the scale is true.
Rules
The next plate comes out at midnight Swiss time. Guesses are unlimited; what counts is how many you need. The search knows the English, German, French and Italian names, the abbreviations (ZH, GR) and spellings without accents. You can also click the map.
- Language: green if the official languages are the same, orange if one of them matches.
- Region: one of the seven major regions of the Federal Statistical Office, such as Central Switzerland or Espace Mittelland.
- Population, area: orange within 25 percent.
- Joined: the year the canton joined the Confederation, orange within 50 years.
- Map: your guess turns green if it is right, orange if it borders the answer, grey otherwise.
Example. The answer is Lucerne and you guess Zug. Language and region are green (German, Central Switzerland). Population (135,018) and area (239 km²) stay uncoloured, with ↑, because Lucerne is much bigger. Joined (1352) is orange with ↓, because Lucerne joined in 1332. On the map Zug turns orange, because it borders Lucerne.
Hard: one of 144 districts. The columns are canton (orange for a neighbouring canton), language region, population, area and municipalities (orange within 25 percent or 2 municipalities); on the map an adjacent district turns orange. Impossible: only the outline of a district, north up and to scale, without its place on the map.
Hints unlock after 4 and 7 guesses. Normal: highest point, then the neighbouring cantons. Hard: first letter, then the largest municipality. Impossible: language region, then the canton.
Where the data comes from
Sources: Federal Statistical Office (FSO) · © swisstopo
Every number comes from official sources, retrieved on 14 October 2026. Cantons, districts and municipalities follow the official register of Swiss municipalities of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) as of 14 October 2026, so Moutier is already part of the canton of Jura. Population is the permanent resident population on 31 December 2025 (FSO, STATPOP). Areas and outlines come from swisstopo’s swissBOUNDARIES3D. A canton’s area includes its lakes; a district’s area leaves out the large lake surfaces that belong to no municipality. Highest and lowest points come from swisstopo’s elevation models and geographic names, official languages from the cantonal constitutions and the years of joining from the Federal Chancellery’s “The Swiss Confederation – a brief guide”. District seats come from Wikipedia and were compared with Wikidata.
Districts are the FSO’s statistical districts: administrative districts in Bern, constituencies in Lucerne and St. Gallen, regions in Graubünden. Nine cantons have no districts (Uri, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Glarus, Zug, Basel-Stadt, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Neuchâtel and Geneva); in Hard mode each counts as a single area.

Frequently asked questions
When is there a new puzzle?
At midnight Swiss time, for everyone at once. After a game, a countdown shows how long until the next plate.
What is the difference between Normal, Hard and Impossible?
Normal: one of the 26 cantons. Hard: one of 144 districts, that is 135 districts plus the nine cantons that have none. Impossible: also a district, but you only see its outline. Each level has its own puzzle, and the three answers of a day always lie in three different cantons.
Where do the numbers come from, and how accurate are they?
From the Federal Statistical Office (register of municipalities, STATPOP 2025) and swisstopo (boundaries, areas, elevations). Population figures are for the end of 2025 and change when the FSO publishes the next ones. Lowest points are read from the elevation model along the canton boundary. Some differ from other published figures, Appenzell Innerrhoden by 21 metres (539 instead of 560 m).
How does the streak with the flame work?
The flame counts the days in a row on which you finished at least one puzzle. Miss a day and it goes back to zero. Each Daily Guess game keeps its own streak.
My statistics are gone. What happened?
Progress, statistics and streak are stored only in your browser; there is no account. Clearing browser data, private browsing or a different device means starting from scratch. A puzzle you have started stays in the same browser.
Can I share my result without giving away the answer?
Yes. The text has coloured squares and the link, never the name of the answer.
Which languages can I play in?
English, German, French and Italian; switch at the top of the page. The search understands all four, so Valais, Wallis and Vallese find the same canton.
